Flopped

I just saw a guy in the restroom wearing flip-flops. I should point out for those of you visiting from elsewhere that rain has been pouring down all day today here in Boston, and it's about 40 degrees.

Sometimes I just want to ask people, "What's wrong with you?" But I don't. Should I?

You're talking like a middle-aged man. I see loads of 30s and under doing the flip flops in the rain -- they're the new rainshoes, graduated from the shower. And if the kids don't mind the cold, then good luck to 'em ... as long as their toes are groomed. I would hope they'd change at work as soon as they get into their office, tho.

But I'm wondering: What *should* the stylish man wear in the rain? I recall boat shoes, and those LL bean slipons...
As a girlywoman, I looooove my knee high galoshes with turtle graphics, and most of the girls around campuses wear similar wear.

It has nothing to do with being middle-aged. It defies logic, that's why it bothers me. It does not make sense to walk around in cold rain getting your feet wet. Human instinct is to seek shelter and protection from the elements. I get why someone might want to do this in summer, but not in early spring. I've decided the person I saw must have had other shoes with him and changed when he got indoors.

As for your other question, there are all kinds of waterproof shoes available. Some people don't care for that option, especially if they are required to wear very dressy shoes. For them, the modern version of galoshes are made of tightly woven nylon with a Gore-Tex membrane and a rubber sole. Only drawback to these is, they are not the least bit warm.
